It has been an unusual week for the Lancers as we made national news following the postponement of our match against Three Bridges after we had players missing on international duty. Following the original piece having over 200,000 hits the story was picked up by national newspapers The Mirror and The Sun which led to BBC Sport contacting chairman Barry Sutton. Reporter Chris Peddy did a piece on us which can be found here Lancing FC: Isthmian League village team’s game postponed because of Bermuda call-ups – BBC Sport
This led to Barry doing interviews with Hawksbee & Jacobs TalkSport show and BBC Radio Sussex. ‘It was all a bit surreal’ said Barry, ‘I had to ask my boss for a bit of time off to do a national radio interview which was a first for both of us!’ The TalkSport interview then appeared on the Hawksbee & Jacobs podcast with Barry being described as ‘really good’ by the hosts. The story was also picked up by The Argus, The Independent and The Metro. ‘I hope this little bit of attention results in a few people coming to Culver Road on Saturday when we play league leaders, Beckenham, to see what the fuss is all about’ added Barry.
The postponement was obviously worth it as Bermuda ran out 6-1 winners on Sunday with Knory Scott scoring the fifth and they will play again on Tuesday
Our other absentees, Sam Bull and Charlie Gibson, reached the quarter-finals of the WMF U23 6-a-side World Cup in Croatia before being beaten 3-0 by Azerbaijan. The tournament was eventually won by Slovakia but Charlie, Sam and the boys did themselves proud with highlights including wins over Austria and Colombia. Both are expected to be back in training on Tuesday ready for Saturday’s match against Beckenham.
